“The existing technical infrastructure was not flexible enough any more to support the innovative ideas of our editorial teams. With the new system, we standardize our production environment. As opposed to the old system, the K4 database offers standard interfaces to our other systems and for data exchange with other divisions of the publishing group.”

Jörg Klaeden, Head of Business IT

In 1975 the foundation stone was laid of the Hamburg-based Publishing Group Milchstrasse. Dirk Manthey established the CINEMA film magazine back then. After 30 years in which a number of additional innovative magazines were successfully launched onto the market, the Milchstrasse publishing group now belongs to the Munich media group HUBERT BURDA MEDIA since the end of 2004. In the Milchstrasse publishing group almost 300 employees produce magazines such as TV Spielfilm, TV Spielfilm XXL, Tv Today, Fit for Fun, Max, and cinema.

In the summer of 2004, Publishing Group Milchstrasse decided to replace their Quark Publishing (QPS) with vjoon K4 and Adobe InDesign. A four-month evaluation of the system and a thorough workflow analysis paved the way for this step.

The implementation of the database-driven production of TV programs (table listing and splash pages) was required for the TV Spielfilm editorial team in a subproject in addition to the integration of K4 as a standard editorial system. SNAP Innovation has realized the integration of K4 with the transmission databases (text and images) that are present in the publishing house in conjunction with Burda Digital Systems GmbH. To this end the standard system with the plug-ins developed by SNAP was extended by the addition of TV specific functions.

In addition, the data exchange with the transmission databases was implemented at a database level. The exchange of data with other publishing house areas was made possible using vjoon K4 via standardized interfaces. This succeeded in efficiently connecting the individual creative processes with one another thanks to the use of Adobe technologies. The following magazines are produced with K4: TV Spielfilm (TV Spielfilm XXL), TV Today (TV Today Digital), Cinema, and Fit for Fun. An additional issue involved the integration of the manufacturing processes in cooperation with Burda Front Office. To this end MadeToPrint Auto is used with vjoon K4.
